Margaritaville is the Town's saving grace

To the Editor:

There is a ridiculous lawsuit by the Lani Kai against other local businesses and the town over parking. Then, the Lani Kai is paying for ads to fight TPI-FMB (now called Margaritaville), which was approved by Town Council in a painstakingly long-studied and agonizingly scrutinized vote.

There were council members who were initially flat out opposed to this resort based upon the Land Development Code. But as TPI's presentation unfolded, the benefits to the entire town included saving the beach view from what would be alloweda rebuilt beachside high rise hotel. TPI is gifting the town over a million dollars in property, vast beautification, parking and housing close by off island for employees with shuttle service, pedestrian bridge over Estero Blvd. AND legal documentation their beach property may never be developed. This went way over and above, fitting the development code to a "T"with the trade-offs and benefits to the town. I watched it start to finish with jubilation.

The Lani Kai and other businesses like it, would never be allowed to be developed as is under the Land Development Code. The additional rooms they were declined in their request, added no benefit whatsoever to the town and certainly not the neighborhood. The entire surrounding neighbors and businesses adjacent to the TPI development, wholeheartedly supported TPI's proposal, even without the additional concessions. The majority of us wish the Lani Kai would spruce up its property.

Margaritaville will attract decent individuals who come to escape to paradise, spend money which supports businesses, and pay heavily into our taxes. These guests who make the island their home for a while, are desirable. This is supposed to be a family friendly island, and that is not the direction is has been going in spite of the Town's efforts. Margaritaville is the Town's saving grace.
