Be careful when buying "fresh" fish

March 26, 2014
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

To the editor:

Recently I went to the Farmer's Market under the Matanzas Pass Bridge to purchase some fresh grouper. There were two fish stands there. One selling shrimp and the other grouper and snapper. The elderly gentleman selling the fish ensured me that it was fresh and never frozen. The product was pre-wrapped and to my dismay when I got home and unwrapped it, there was a distinct strong fishy smell -a good indicator that the fish was far from fresh. My mistake for trusting and not checking. After washing, breading and cooking, the taste was far from good. This fish had been frozen.

It is disappointing that a local marketeer would take advantage of trusting tourists like myself. I will be staying in Fort Myers Beach for another few weeks and would like to warn all to please buy from a reputable fish dealer NOT the nice, old guy under the bridge. I have talked to him to air my disappointment.

I did buy from the fellow at Santini Plaza Farmers Market on a Tuesday afterwards and the Mahi Mahi was fantastic. I will be returning to him for my fish from now on, but get there early because he sells out fast.
