Shrimp Parade, Princesses, and Pageant!

February 5, 2014
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

To the editor:

The Fort Myers Beach Lions Club's 56th Annual Shrimp Festival will be here soon. This is the biggest event of the year on our island. The parade, the Shrimp Queen pageant, the island restaurant specials, the unique island shops, and most of all... the shrimp! Big...Pink...Fresh...Local...Gulf Shrimp! How lucky are we to live on such a beautiful island, with such a fabulous community, and have fresh shrimp unloaded right at our docks?! Shrimp so awesome there is an annual festival for it!

Every year there is a grand parade, and one of the most famous parts of the parade are our princesses riding atop sporty corvettes, where one will be crowned the 56th Shrimp Festival queen. There are a variety of awards, prizes, and fun for competing princesses, and the princess crowned 2014 Beach Lions Shrimp Festival Queen also receives a $500 College Scholarship!

This event is a lot of fun. If you are a single girl between the ages of 16 - 20 and are interested in entering this year's pageant, please sign up soon as entry is limited. Princesses will make new friends, receive community service hours, receive a savings bond, special gifts, compete for awards and more. The reigning Shrimp Festival queen, Miss Red Coconut's Christina Glase, can be seen around the island as she helps kick off this years annual Festival. Anyone interested in entering the pageant, please call Tracey Gore at 239-849-3603, or go to www.fortmyersbeachshrimpfestival.com where you can download an Entry Form.

A few upcoming princess events will be Feb. 22 at Bay Oaks Ball Field where our reigning queen will participate in the Little League's Opening Ceremony; the Sunday Social March 2 for the Princesses, their families, sponsors and the Beach Lion's members being hosted by Matanzas Restaurant (the perfect spot to view the shrimp boat fleet across the bay); and Bonita Bill's Waterfront Cafe' will open their Event Hall to host the Princesses so they can gather and prep for the parade & pageant. This year's Shrimp Festival is sure to be fabulous, as always!
