The city of Cape Coral will celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (1929 1968) with its first "Martin Luther King Day Celebration" on Monday, Jan. 20, at Oasis High School. Oasis High School is at 3519 Oasis Boulevard. The public is invited to attend.

City Manager John Szerlag and the City's Charter School Administrator Dr. Angela Pruitt will host the event at the Oasis High School gymnasium beginning at 8:30 a.m. Dr. Derrick Donnell, an educator and current City Council member, will be the keynote speaker.

Awards will be presented to the student winners of essay and art contests addressing the theme: "What does 'freedom' mean to you?"

The one-hour program will conclude with a short "Unity Walk" that will take participants from the gymnasium to the cafeteria where coffee, juice and donuts will be provided.
