Kids in need of bone marrow transplants

November 6, 2013
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

To the editor:

Leukemia accounts for about 1 in 3 cases of cancer in children, and causes almost 1/3 of cancer deaths in kids under 15.

This is a tragic fact, and one that has the potential to be changed. A marrow transplant can give these children their lives back-it may well be their only hope for survival.

Two years ago, Be The Match launched the Transplant Grants for Kids program helping to ensure that every child has his or her chance at a life-saving marrow transplant. In just over two years, hundreds of children have already received comfort and support.

Today, you have the power to help give a child the gift of life. Your donation to Be The Match helps families through the most difficult times of their lives.

In one case, parents Lindsey and Alex tried for years to bring a child into their family. It was heartbreaking to find their firstborn daughter, Kate, diagnosed with a rare type of bone marrow failure at only 10 months old, requiring a marrow transplant to live. Be The Match was their best chance of finding a donor, and we rely on you to help us make those matches.

As you start thinking about your holiday gift lists, please don't forget about the thousands of patients counting on us. You have the power to help make the next life-saving match possible. Give now and give the gift of life.
