Xeriscaping

Library landscaping has been designed to save water and require less maintenance. This past week ten master gardeners spent time sprucing up the landscaping. If you notice a plant that seems to be dying or is not the picture perfect image of plants heavily watered and replaced, feel free to discuss it with me but don't assume that the plant is not doing what nature intended. We will be adding signage in about nine months that explains more of the ins and outs of the various trees, shrubs and plants. Meanwhile, give the landscaping time to do its thing.

Cellphone Use

The Library Commons on the Third Floor is a pleasant, inviting space for cellphone and for eating. We encourage users on the first and second floors to honor those quiet places that are an integral part of browsing and studying and reading. The Living Room on the Second floor is for reading of magazines and newspapers and quiet reflection/study, not the clicking of computers or cell phone conversations. When we all work together to achieve this and expect it of each other, it all contributes to creating a great environment.

Smoking

If you notice a smoker doing so on library grounds, please ask them to move out to the sidewalk and walk in the direction of traffic and smoke there as in accord with Lee County policy.

Gardeners

Last Friday Lee County Extension celebrated the graduation of the Master Gardener class. The 104 gathered for the celebration in the Community Room, enjoyed breakfast and lunch prepared by the Cafe' managers and the day went very well. It's encouraging when caring about the environment and the goodness of people come together. It was a time and activity that was enhanced by the place it met in too.

Returning Materials

When putting items in the sorter upon returning them, whether in the inside or outside sorter, please put one item at a time in. This enables the check-in to go smoothly. We find that some people returning items are putting them in too fast--this means the system accepts them but they get put in a "needs attention" bin, which requires staff to check them. If you put in an item and wait with the next title until the second blue light is lit (which reads item recognized), then you can proceed with putting in the next title.

Schedule

The May Community Room schedule is ready and available at the first and second floor staff workstations as well as on the library homepage. Note too the space and form at the end of the schedule inviting suggestions for additional presentations or seminars desired. We look at these suggestions carefully.

The Cafe' starts its summer schedule being closed on Saturday. We reopen on Saturday in Nov or Dec. Regular cafe' hours are Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Continued Thanks

The gracious and diverse notes of praise being received regarding the completion of the library expansion and renovation are ones we appreciate very much. There is a rare day that staff do not hear comments about how great the project has turned out with notes of delight about one or other feature. In addition, I find in making my way around the library, that many share similar comments of praise or congratulations or good-will. It is appreciated. We've worked very hard and will continue to do so.

Library Hours

When we are closed, the hours of operation are included in a recording when you call in. Stop by on Monday and Wednesday between 9 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 9 and 5, and on Saturday between 9 and 4. We look forward to seeing you.
