Details

It's hard in the space of this column to share many of the details for this week's events in the Community Room. Suffice it to say, there's a lot happening. Pick up a schedule of February's events so you can plan ahead and not miss presentations that are very valuable and well worth the time spent or go to www.lib.fl.us.

Returning Materials

If you're returning books, audios and DVDs after hours, they may be returned to the Materials Drop in the back of the library as you enter the library grounds from Bay Road. The Materials Drop is identical to the one inside the lobby, only a door opens when it detects your presence to prevent moisture from entering otherwise. If you're returning items during hours the library is open, we appreciate it if you return the titles to the Materials Return inside the lobby. When you enter the front doors, there are three sand paths in the terrazzo floor--one goes to the stairs to the First Floor, one to the Elevator, and one to the Materials Return. Using the Materials Returns saves staff time and gets materials quicker to be available to be checked out again, and also removes them from your record.

Bike Users

We're happy when users come to the library via bicycle. Please park your bike, not near the front entrance and don't chain or lean it against a sign post or flag pole. There is a bike rack at the corner of the building, or one inside the parking garage.

Grand Opening

The Grand Opening of the completed library will be Friday, March 22 and Saturday March 23. A committee is in process with working out details and these will be shared when confirmed. We hear so many positive comments about the construction and final product that we're excited to celebrate the Grand Opening. By having a longer time, a variety of activities will enable many to participate in lots of ways.

Collection

If you observe, you'll likely see more titles on the shelves each week. We began the process of returning titles to the shelves that have been in storage during the time the renovation was underway. Not only is it fun to see more available, but also it expands both the breadth and depth of the collection. New titles continue to be added as always and I will be meeting with e-books rep in a week to work out the final details for starting our e-book collection.

Volunteers

If you have a few hours one day a week to share, consider volunteering to assist library staff as a Volunteer for the many tasks that need to be done. We need and rely on volunteers and many hands make the workload lighter. We like having a Greeter at the entrance each hour we are open so if you can offer some time to assist in that pleasant job, consider filling out a Greeter Volunteer application.

Magazines

Many of our magazines are sponsored and made possible through the kindness of individuals and businesses. We find that magazines are in great demand and that it is a fairly routine practice to find users spending hours at a time in reading and viewing a variety of publications. Feel free to request a listing of magazines that need a sponsor from a staff member.

Postcards

We have received many postcards over the years. These have been reviewed and now on the second floor (one framing near the Quiet Room, and several framings near the water fountains) are postcards highlighting many different aspects of the Beach. To be found are postcards covering a wide range of years.

Hours

A recorder gives the hours we are open if you call in at 765-8162 when we are closed. Open hours are Monday and Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
