Taking a few weeks off for their annual post-summer deep-cleaning and remodeling phase, the folks at Nervous Nellie's (1131 1st St.) will close their doors for just under a month, beginning the day after Labor Day (Tuesday, Sept. 4), to reopen Friday, Sept. 28, giving them a chance to give the award-winning business a much-earned tropical makeover, brightening up the establishment and adding even more style.
"Being one of the busier restaurants on Fort Myers Beach, we'll be taking care of some much-needed repairs, as well as sprucing up and placing some great additions for the upcoming season," said Stephen DeAngelis, assistant general manager of the restaurant. "Aside from freshening up the interior with some new carpeting and new paint, we will be extending the Sky Deck upstairs, to allow a much better panoramic view of the back bay, as well as installing some sail shades upstairs, which will increase the sun protection and add a really modern look to the outside deck."
But, that's just the beginning of the remodeling.

"Wait until you see what we're going to do with the bar upstairs at Ugly's," said Rob DeGennaro, owner of the Bay Walk establishment. "We're going to have an all-new sponsorship with Ugly's, switching it over and getting a brand new facelift by Sailor Jerry Rum and Stolichnaya Vodka. So, there will be an all-new design to the bar."
"Then, on the lower level, plans are under way for the installation of five giantly oversized palm-thatched chickee umbrellas, so we can offer our guests even better sun protection without interrupting their gorgeous view of the bay," Stephen said. "So, the lower deck will have a much more tropical look."
"These chickee huts are going to be fantastic," Rob said. "They're really lush and really tropical. You have to come check them out once we reopen."
Along with physical adjustments and remodifications to the restaurant, Nellie's staff has been working on revamping the entertainment lineup, "featuring all of the crowd favorites all in preparation for a busy upcoming season, to enhance our upcoming events we have on our schedule, starting with our Pirate's Ball (part of the FMB Pirate Festival) the first week of October, followed by our big Halloween Bash."
As Nervous Nellies loves to host big events on a regular basis, you better believe they plan on offering several special nights prior to closing their doors for three weeks.
"We are going to have a huge, gigantic Labor Day weekend party Saturday, Sunday and Monday before we close, featuring an all-star jam of live music, free food, free drinks, giveaways and other big specials all for our locals," Rob said. "Lots of liquor companies will be on-hand giving away free prizes and samples, all to celebrate the closing."
And, every Friday night, from 6 to 9 p.m., stop by the establishment for Country Night, featuring some of the best boot-scootin', hootin' and hollerin' country bands around town, as well as Gator Country 101.9-FM on-location, with DJs Val and Scott from the Morning Show, giving out all types of prizes and giveaways, from T-shirts and new albums to free resort hotel rooms, dinners, gift cards and more.
"Plus, you have to try our special drink that night the Gator in a Glass," Rob said. "You just have to try it. It's $7.95 and you get to keep the glass. Also enjoy $2 Bud drafts that night, and $2.50 Bud bottles."
Friday, Aug. 10, catch Blueberry Jam live on stage, followed by the Fakahatchee Band Aug. 17, The Damn Outlaws Aug. 24, and Rob Matson Aug. 31.
Wouldn't you know it, the DAY Nervous Nellie's opens, Rob plans to host an Unveiling Party, Friday, Sept. 28. That evening, starting at 5 p.m., enjoy free food, free drinks, live music, Sailor Jerry and Stoli Vodka girls, giving away all types of free stuff, and so much reopening fun, you won't know what to do with yourself!
After the Unveiling Party late September, followed by the Pirate's Ball and Halloween Bash, be sure to swing by Nov. 17, as plans are in the works for a South Florida All-Day Bike Event, featuring Rolling Stones, U2 and Beatles tribute bands, along with so much more.
Leading up to Labor Day weekend, Nervous Nellie's plans to operate during normal business hours.
