Don Wade Memorial holds Post-Tournament Fundraiser

May 15, 2012
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

The 19th annual Don Wade & Li'l Betty Memorial Golf Tournament has a new feature this year-an "after-the-tournament" fundraiser on May 19, from 5 to 9 p.m. at American Legion Post 274, 899 Buttonwood Dr., Fort Myers Beach.

Each year, four local veteran-focused organizations join forces to raise funds for local veterans clinics: VFW Post 10097, American Legion Post 274, Sons of American Legion Squadron 274, and Veterans Club of America Post #1 (aka, "The Little Club"). Counting last year's successful tournament, the Don Wade Memorial Fund has contributed $203,500 to-date to further serve the needs of Lee County veteran-patients who served our country. Last year's donations enabled the Don Wade Committee to purchase two golf-cart shuttle vehicles to transport patients between the parking areas and the new veterans hospital in Cape Coral scheduled to open this fall. The donations also included two scholarships for local needy veterans.

This year's golf tournament on May 12 is filled to capacity, but there's still ample opportunity to help veterans by attending the Post-Tournament Fundraiser on May 19, which includes a silent auction featuring hotel packages, golfing packages, spa and restaurant deals; raffles, a Gift-Card Tree and lots more. Each attendee receives a free ticket for a chance to win one of the door prizes. All proceeds from the aforementioned auctions and raffles go to benefit our veterans clinics and programs.

Food is available for purchase from the American Legion from 5-7 p.m. Music and dancing will be provided by The Harry Boyle Show from 7:30-10:30 p.m.

If you cannot attend and still want to contribute, please make checks payable to: Don Wade Memorial Fund, c/o VFW Post 10097, 17770 Pine Ridge Rd., Fort Myers Beach FL 33931.

The Don Wade Committee is grateful to our area-wide businesses for their gracious donations, the Don Wade Volunteers, golfers, hole sponsors and to those individuals who have contributed so much to further benefit our veterans. Remember, freedom is not free, so don't forget to thank a vet.
