Pedestrians should take own responsibility when crossing streets

April 25, 2012
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

To the editor:

The crosswalk safety issue is a two-way street (no pun intended).

Many pedestrians and bicyclists, place ALL their safety responsibilities in the hands of the vehicle drivers, which does illustrate "Darwin's Law" at it's finest. The "stupid" don't survive in this world very long.

At the same time I've seen many a driver totally disregard people attempting to use crosswalks on Estero Boulevard.

I have also seen, on many occasions, young people talking on cell phones and texting and jump out in the street, NOT looking EITHER way into the rolling path of my vehicle. It forces me to immediately SLAM on my brakes!!

We drivers DON'T carry the FULL brunt of someone else's LACK of regard for his or her own safety. At the same time, drivers need to pay attention, honor the people attempting to cross the streets at ALL crosswalks. But the idiot jaywalkers or bicyclists who jumps out in front of you while we are driving, looking neither way, are open season, as far as I'm concerned.
