To the editor:
I was appalled by the lack of preparation and vision of our Council at the "More Booze on the Sand" meeting.
There seems to be a mindset of this Council to "pass it and read it later." They have not done their homework as to cost - and many other issues.
The Sheriff's Office is not obligated to enforce local ordinances. We must enter into an Interlocal Agreement with the Sheriff and pay his costs. I personally negotiated with the Sheriff for the Town to pay the added cost of enforcement of Town ordinances. Our Sheriff went out of his way to work with us, but does not have unlimited funds and must protect the entire County.
To enforce the new "More Booze on the Sand" ordinance, it may take half of our Sheriff's current staff to keep all businesses in compliance every day. One location that comes to mind needs one deputy per table now!
What will this cost? Who will pay for this gross incompetence by Council and staff? Guess who?
