Neighborhood group concerned for safety on Estero Boulevard

April 18, 2012
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

To the editor:

I am writing this letter as President of EBIA (Estero Bay Improvement Association), an Association of 16 individual Condominium Associations with 1,235 owners all of whom access their units off of Bay Beach Lane, a street owned by EBIA and only accessible off of Estero Boulevard.

Our street is also the only access to the Fort Myers Beach Golf Course with its additional traffic. We have a dedicated pedestrian beach access for our members, just north of the intersection of Bay Beach Lane and Estero Boulevard. Our members must cross Estero Boulevard to reach the access.

During season, the vehicular and pedestrian traffic are very heavy, particularly around the above intersection causing us to have strong concerns for the safety of all parties. We have applied for permission to install bollards at the crosswalk over Estero Boulevard to our beach access. Many of our members enjoy walks along the beach in the evening to view the sunset.

Our safety concerns are compounded during this period because of poor street lighting in the above-mentioned area. There have been numerous incidents along Estero Boulevard in the past several years involving vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles, some of which have been fatal.

We strongly urge the Town and/or County to aggressively seek solutions to these serious issues for the safety of all affected parties.

Errol Hohmann

President, EBIA
