Beach Library board candidate discusses letter

April 11, 2012
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

To the editor:

Mr. Gottlieb's letter opposing library critics Miller and Quiros illustrates (unwittingly to be sure) almost all that is wrong with the library governance under the present director and includes the tenure of his wife as a director.

Firs,t Mr. Gottlieb tells of "a great and friendly cultural institution." The expansion contains almost nothing pertaining to a library. A more accurate definition of it is a civic center and commercial enterprise as it has a bookstore, caf and meeting room all of which will directly compete with existing town businesses.

Mr. Gottlieb also dismissively says, "The writers talk only about money." To most of us, money is important, and we have to spend it wisely. The town has to find a source of about $15 million to replace a failing water supply. This is critical. However great a cultural institution the library may or may not prove to be, it was not critical that $8 million had to be spent on it.

Finally Mr. Gottlieb chides us by saying, "So for those who belatedly woke up to realize that the library costs money," I would say that the awakening was belated due to the library director and board making almost no effort to widely publicize what it was in fact doing with the surpluses it deviously extracted from us the taxpayers.

Disclosure: I am going to run for a position on the library board in what will be its first ever competitive election.
