Resident likes referendum language

January 25, 2012
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

To the editor:

Congratulations to the Town of Fort Myers Beach for using a little known, little used procedure among local government agencies to obtain approval prior to spending taxpayer funds called a R E F E R E N D U M.

The Town is requesting feedback on the question of whether to proceed with planning for a new town hall. The referendum is a legal document prepared with specific requirements unlike a survey with questions that could be slanted to favor the outcome.

It allows all residents to "vote" their opinion as opposed to returns from a select mailing. The referendum results cannot be "lost." The Town's referendum proposes a clear source of funding versus the possibility of using less transparent difficult to track surplus funds.

The referendum's proposed funding spreads the cost over future users of the facility rather than placing the entire financial burden strictly on today's taxpayer.

What a refreshing approach, wonder why all taxing districts don't use a referendum? Thank you elected Town officials.
