Background: Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) is one of four universities commending the continued growth of the Tree Campus USA program this fall 2011/winter 2012, now in its third year. The Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota are granting 40 trees to FGCU and are teaming up with students to plant these trees during the ceremonial recognition of the university being named a Tree Campus USA. The Arbor Day Foundation chose FGCU because of the local support from organizations, such as the Florida Urban Forest Council that help recruit new Tree Campuses in the state, and FGCU students, including Keishla Negron who played an active role helping the university meet the requirements of the program. The Arbor Day Foundation has awarded 116 colleges and universities with Tree Campus USA distinction. The Tree Campus USA program was created by the Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota to honor colleges and universities promoting healthy urban forest management and engaging the campus community in environmental stewardship.
