More tax and spend for Town government

January 18, 2012
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

To the editor:

Town Council has placed a referendum to be voted on by ALL registered voters for a $7 million EXTRAVAGANZA new office building on the Republican Primary Ballot for Jan. 31.

The Town Manager has suggested constructing a new office building for himself, Town staff and Council. The Town Manager is suggesting that the current office space of about 6,800 square feet be increased to 12,000 square feet. That is a growth of 76 percent for future Town staff expansions, etc.

At $7 million, this 12,000-foot office would certainly be out of keeping with the current bad economy. The Town says that they might not spend all this gravy but they want it anyway. No economic justification was given for a greatly enlarged office.

At Council meeting last week, even Mayor Kiker said several times that $7 million was crazy or words to that effect. He also made clear that a rejection by the voters would not upset the Council who has other priorities to work on.

Added to the $7 million debt and interest millstone that our taxpayers would have are the expense additions of filling all this space with more expensive Town workers. Even the Town Manager's $177,000 annual compensation package might get bumped up with "more responsibility."

With the newly added taxes to your electric bills and the taxpayers' added costs that will go with the $13 million or so of approved new debt for the needed new water main system, taxpayer wallets are headed for much more REDUCTIONS unless voters say NO!
