Searching the Internet class on Thursday, Dec. 29, at 10:30 a.m. Pre-register.

We are closed Monday, Jan. 2 in observance of New Years.

There are many presentations and seminars scheduled in the Conference Room during January. Pick-up a schedule available at the front desk.

This is the last week for the Pet Food Drive, with a container at the front desk. Every year during the month of December, the non-profit Find A Home, Give A Home sponsors a pet food drive. Drop off cat food-wet or dry--and dog food or cat or dog toys. The purpose of Find A Home, Give A Home is to offer spaying and neutering, vaccinations and help to cats and dogs in need on Fort Myers Beach and San Carlos Island, and to give our furry friends the opportunity to find a home forever.

We welcome a volunteer to assist in Internet sign-ups during January to April for a 4-hour shift each week. Open shifts are Tuesdays and Wednesdays. If you can handle detail, enjoy people and have a patient nature, consider completing an application. We'll get in touch right away.

Avid knitters and crocheters are invited to review "Big Book of Knitting" (746.432 BUS" or "100 Crochet Projects" (746.434 LEI) and check out adjoining titles too. The knitting and needlework group will meet Wednesday, January 4 at 6:30pm.

Consider "Accidental Genius: revolutionize your thinking through private writing" (808.042 LEV) and "American Sea Writing" (810.803 AME). Writer's class with Corinne Thwing meets Tuesday, January 10 in the Large Print alcove.

12 Days

As we are in the 12 days of Christmas, the song by the same name comes to mind. If one gathered all the items for the song, including the 12 drummers drumming and 11 pipers piping, it would cost $24,263 this holiday season. As intruguing as that is, consider that if one got all the gifts from all the repeated verses, e.g. 12 partridges in the pear tree, the 364 gifts would total $101,119.84. Thanks to The Atlantic for making the calculations.

The second floor of the addition is in place and blocks for the third floor walls are now being laid.

The highest beam will be raised in early January, which means the floors and walls of the expansion will be finished by then. Like many in the community, we look forward to the day in 2012 when all is complete!

Fans of Jane Austen almost universally hold that Jane Austen wrote too little. 2011 marks the 200th anniversary of publication of "Sense and Sensibility" (CL AUS, on CD at AUS).

The crime fiction writer, P.D. James is given credit for writing in Jane Austen's creative legacy. In "Death Comes to Pemberley" (On Order), she draws the characters of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" (CL AUS, and on CD at AUS) into a tale of murder. Six years after the close of "Pride and Prejudice," Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett are happily married and living at Pemberley when Elizabeth's sister, Lydia, arrives at the home to inform them of a murder. Austen fans will know that Lydia equals trouble. What ensues makes for a first-rate murder mystery.

Those seeking to enjoy Austen even more are invited to pick up "The Penguin Complete Novels of Jane Austen" (CL AUS).
