On display in the case near the Catalog Station on the first floor are Hummel figurines. Not only do these figurines have an interesting history but they have found a place in many homes throughout the world. In the 1930s, the German company Goebel thought that in a world of political turmoil, customers would respond to a product that depictured the gentle innocence of childhood. With the first Hummel figurines introduced at the 1936 Leipzig Fair, they have continued, outside of a few years when Germany was occupied during the World War, to be produced each year. The current production schedule for 2011 is almost mind-blowing as so many new Hummels are reaching out to collectors across the world.

The Hummels on display during November and December revolve around a Christmas theme, and each week a few more are added to the arrangement.

Beams for the tower and entrance are in place. You may also notice that the walls for the parking area are almost finished. Stairs and other support structures are underway and soon the walls of the second floor of the expansion will be underway.

Thank you for remembering to include the Library Construction Fund in your giving options.

Remembering the Beach Library and giving a gift to keep serving the community is a priceless way to remember a loved one. It's also a way to honor a person on a particular occasion. We can send an acknowledgment to the family or honored one.

Planning for the Future

Current users are reaping returns not only from current funds supporting the library, but also from the foresight and generosity of past tax and philanthropic support. Yet, no matter how generous or lavish the past investment, it is current support that permits users to access collections conveniently, receive staff assistance to find and use collections effectively, and assure that the collections built up over time will continue to be preserved and available.

From the many comments heard in recent weeks, it is clear that the community overall recognizes the value of the Beach Library. The current construction has taken many years of planning and sets the library not only to offer today's best but to be situated that we can serve effectively for the upcoming decades. While no one knows the future 100%, it is reasonable from the demands and usage of public libraries across the United States that we must be situated for many decades to come as library usage is growing. As libraries continue to be the hub of activity, residents and visitors will welcome increased options.

Library Hours

When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours of operation, either on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 to 5; and Saturday 9-1. We look forward to seeing you.
