Bonsai Society holds free annual show & sale

Bonsai enthusiasts throughout Southwest Florida are invited to the Annual Bonsai Show & Sale on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1 and 2. The free event, sponsored by the Bonsai Society of Southwest Florida, will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Lee County Election Center in Fort Myers, 13180 S. Cleveland Ave., Fort Myers (across from the Bell Tower Mall).

The free event will feature bonsai exhibits and critiques, workshops and demonstrations, raffles, silent auctions, and sales of bonsai trees and supplies. Special features include the introduction of young artists Mike Lane, Mike Feduccia, Tony Stuart, and Jason Osborne. An added feature this year will be bonsai trees exhibited by the Sarasota Bonsai Club.

Round robins will be held both Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon. The round robin features several artists working on one tree in tandem. Saturday's round robin will feature Ed Trout, Jason Osborne, and Dorothy Schmitz. Sunday's round robin's artists are Ed Trout, Michael Feduccia, Michael Lane, and Justin Michael. There is no charge to observe these activities.

Workshops are scheduled both days. There is a $20 charge to attend but no pre-registration is required.

n Saturday, 4 to 6 p.m. Ed Trout, BYOT; and Ernie Fernandez, Beginners workshop, including a tree

n Sunday, 1 to 3 p.m. Dorothy Schmitz and Richard Owens, Tree Photography/Photoshop workshop and how to create a virtual tree; Ernie Fernandez, Beginners workshop, including a tree; and Judy Gore, Modern Flower Arranging in an Oriental Manner.

A special presenters' "flying robin" will be held on Sunday, 3 to 5 p.m. Ten experienced artists will participate in this event. There is no charge to attend.

Bonsai is a horticultural art of growing trees in pots. It had its origins in China and Japan. Information about bonsai and the association will be available at the meeting.
