Robert (Bob) Irwin, 87, passed away in Rochester NY on May 21. Bob was born in Colberg, Canada and lived most of his life in the Rochester NY area.
While serving in the Army Air Force, he was stationed at Buckingham and grew to love the Fort Myers area. He flew several bombing missions to Europe as a ball turret gunner (described as the toughest ride in the air corps.) After the war, Bob returned to Rochester as the owner of Elmgrove Fruit Farm. His large farm specialized in apples that were sold at the farm store and throughout the U.S.
In Rochester, Bob was active as a Boy Scout Leader, School Board Member and Masonic Lodge member.
At retirement, Bob returned to Fort Myers Beach where he was active in the Fort Myers Beach Kiwanis, American Legion and Chapel By the Sea for 15 years.
Before returning to NY to be near family, he resided in the Whiskey Creek area where he enjoyed showing his golf skills. He was an outstanding athlete and a competitive euchre and poker player. He was a good neighbor and loved by his many friends on Egret Street.
Bob was pre-deceased by his wife, Gloria, and his brother, Richard. He is survived by his children, Allan (Suka) Irwin, Karen (David) Teske, and Carol (Ken) Soprano; grandchildren, Michael Teske, Kara Teske and Thomas Irwin; and by his sister, Dorothy Van Zandt. Bob was very proud of his family; he loved hosting them on Fort Myers Beach.
Fort Myers Beach Kiwanians and friends will remember Bob as a dependable volunteer, thoughtful neighbor, good friend, fun-loving competitor and a gentleman.
Donations may be sent to American Heart Association or to the Fort Myers Beach Kiwanis.
Robert T. Irwin.
