Ready to rock and ride! Annual toy drive and bike run to help local kids in need

November 19, 2010
By MELISSA SCHNEIDER mschneider@breezenewspapers.com

The 10th annual Toys For Christmas Toy Drive and Patrick Stott Memorial Bike Run will be taking place at The Beach Pub this Sunday, Nov. 21, with registration at 10 a.m. and the ride beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Lou Caleca, co-owner of the Beach Pub and avid biker, is sure to organize his run around distance, with about three stops, ensuring the riders have plenty of time to enjoy some wind in the hair.

"During the run, which is a 90-mile ride, we'll be heading out to the Corkscrew Country Store and the Buckingham Blues Bar," he said. "Since it's such a nice stretch, you'll be able to get some wind in your hair, so to speak."

Once returning to the Beach Pub around 2/2:30-ish, riders will walk into fresh music from local sensation Steve "the Lucky Dog"?Lutke, followed by Elijah, Joel and special guest performances by Patrick's little brother Paul Stott and Casey's Houserockers.

Also, that's when the cards will be pulled for the poker hands, which is just $10 per hand.

Plenty of 50/50s, raffles, prizes, food platters and refreshments will be served, as well as beer specials, great music as mentioned previously and so much more.

"Thanks to all of the local businesses, we're doing a raffle again this year, and we're just starting to receive some toys, but most come in the day of the benefit," Lou said.

All toys and funds raised are donated to the Fort Myers Beach Fire Department for proper dispersal to our local islanders, offering an extra ray of cheer during the holiday season.

Lou is sure to offer his personal assistance for those not able to make the benefit.

"If anybody on the island would like to donate but can't come to the party Sunday, just call the Beach Pub and I will pick up your donation personally," he said. "I'm always excited to hold this benefit, for all the good that it does for our community especially in these hard economic times I feel it's especially important to continue it right now."

For those not making it on the run, the party will be taking place at the Beach Pub from noon 'til the cows come home.

"Everybody I see every year, at the benefit and while raising funds and prizes for the benefit, they have all been so very generous," Lou proudly stated. "I want to give a big thank you to all participating."
