To the editor:
As a new resident, I've found the islanders to be welcoming, helpful and thoughtful at every turn, that is, unless you choose running as your daily exercise.
When I run, I take every precaution to be safe. I run only in daylight hours, always run on the sidewalk and wear brightly colored clothing. In addition, I make eye contact with drivers pulling out of side streets or crossing Estero Boulevard into a side street. Apparently this isn't enough to avoid nearly being run over by pre-occupied motorists.
One morning last week, I avoided serious injury by pounding on the grill and screaming at the driver of a Ford F150 pickup truck as I crossed the entrance of the street onto the next sidewalk. Not only was it a frightening experience, but I had taken all the precautions above. Was a morning smile and thank you as I passed through the intersection not enough for the driver to remain focused long enough so as not to run me over?
Drivers, please be aware of your surroundings.It would be a tragedy for a runner to be found dead right in paradise.
