Peggy Monk, 89, died at home in Des Moines, Iowa on Sunday, March 2l, 2010. A celebration of Peggy's life will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 27, at West Des Moines United Methodist Church. A second celebration with her friends in Florida will be held later this spring.
Peggy was born December 15, 1920, in Des Moines to William and Judetta Winder. She graduated from East High school and attended Drake University. After WWII, she and her husband James H. (Jim) Monk, made their home in Iowa, living first in Chariton, and then in Des Moines. After retiring, they moved to Fort Myers Beach, living first at Estero Beach Club (where Jim was the manager), and then at Cinnamon Cove. Throughout her retired years, Peggy kept busy, working part time, teaching women's water exercise, playing cards, and doing volunteer work. Her favorite job was at Mother Earth Foods, where she worked for more than 10 years. She also shared her faith and spirit with hundreds of children and parents in her 50 years as a Sunday school teacher at Chapel by the Sea on Fort Myers Beach.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her spouse, Jim, her seven brothers and sisters and her step-grandson, Jeffery Richardson. She is survived by her children, Judith (Monk) Richardson and James C. Monk; grandchildren, Lisa Norris Jennie (Richardson) Ketchum, Sean Richardson, Kenny Monk, and Bradley Monk; and her great grandchildren, Sophia Richardson, Courtney Ketchum and Kailee Ketchum.
