Robert Everett Hartje, 92

Robert Everett Hartje, 92, departed this life on May 12 at the McGraw Center for Caring in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born September 2, 1916, in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey to Ernest and Amelia Hartje.

Mr. Hartje graduated as the salutatorian of Ridgefield Park High School and captain of the track team. He earned his BA from Colgate University in 1938 and his MBA from Harvard University in 1940. Upon graduation, he began his 40-year career as a corporate executive with Ingersoll Rand Corporation. He served in the United States Army during World War II, working on the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, New Mexico. He was married 63 years to Joanne Hartje and had two sons. He lived in Martinsville, New Jersey, for 40 years. He retired to Fort Myers Beach, Florida, and was a member of the Presbyterian Chapel by the Sea and the Harvard Alumni Club. He and Joanne moved to Cypress Village in Jacksonville in 2007 to live close to family.

Mr. Hartje is predeceased by his brother, Donald A. Hartje, and his parents. He is survived by his wife Joanne; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Patricia Hartje of Chattanooga, TN; Richard and Anne Hartje of Jacksonville, FL; and his four grandchildren, Mathew and Rebecca Hartje of Chattanooga and William and Amelia Hartje of Jacksonville as well as several nieces and nephews and many friends. He will be missed for his positive outlook on life and love of friends and family.

A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 23 at Cypress Village, 4600 Middleton Park Circle East, Jacksonville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Bob to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257 or Hope Hospice of Southwest Florida, 9470 Health Park Circle, Ft. Myers, FL 33908. The family would especially like to thank the staffs of Community Hospice and Hope Hospice for their compassionate care during Dad's extended illness.
